Meeting January 18th: Arrow's Impossibility Theorem and Its Implications for Democracy, Dictatorship and Elections

This Wednesday Anil will give a presentation on Arrow's Impossibility Theorem and Its Implications for Democracy, Dictatorship and Elections.

Arrows Paradox, states that, when voters have three or more distinct alternatives (options), no voting system can convert the ranked preferences of individuals into a community-wide (complete and transitive) ranking while also meeting a specific set of criteria. These criteria are called unrestricted domain, non-dictatorship, Pareto efficiency, and independence of irrelevant alternatives. The theorem is named after economist Kenneth Arrow, who demonstrated the theorem in his Ph.D. thesis and popularized it in his 1951 book Social Choice and Individual Values.

Meet at 7pm in the Frances Hoopes Seminar Room of the Marriott Library.

Meeting Dec. 21st: Socialism and Anarchism: Different Philosophies with Common Goals

This Wednesday the Freedom Socialist Managing Editor Andrea Bauer, will discuss Socialism and Anarchism over Skype. Both socialism and anarchism originated around the early 1800s in response to the terrible conditions of workers, small craftspeople, and peasants with the rise of capitalism, which threw people off the land and forced them into the cities to work brutal hours in health-destroying factories. In the second half of the 1800s, socialist and anarchist ideas began to take more definite shape and to diverge from one another. read more @ http://www.socialism.com/drupal-6.8/?q=node%2F1776
